Using a Rotary Vice

1) The Bobbin Holder.     The bobbin holder should be set to the same height as the center line of rotation of the vice. Get into the habit of always tying a half hitch around the shank of the hook before using the bobbin rest. This prevents the thread from unraveling while rotating the vice.

2) Applying Dubbing.    In the picture above and below the dubbing is being wound around the shank of the hook by rotating the vice. (The dubbing loop was formed earlier) Using this method allows easy control of the dubbing as you are always viewing the fly where the body is being formed. (No surprises later when the back of the fly is viewed) The dubbing can be easily manipulated round the wing without catching any fibers.

3) Applying Heckle    In a similar manner a hackle can easily be controlled when wrapping .

4) Wrapping Ribbing     Rib application becomes simple as one is always viewing the fly from the point where the rib is crossing the hackle. A small left to right movement of the ribbing as it crosses over the hackle prevents any fibers being trapped.
